Needed:
Lid - Twisty-Tie - Eight Popsicle Sticks |
| |
| This
sun craft was designed with Earth Day in mind. Solar power is very
good for the environment and often is a common topic during Earth
Day discussions. The materials needed for this sun include only
a lid, twisty-tie, and Popsicle sticks, although you may find that
a cutting utensil can make the job easier. Generally the materials
needed are discarded, making this craft a great way to teach your
child about the importance of reusing materials. |

Step
1: If your little one is interested in twisty-ties, like
so many children are, then he or she is going to love helping with
step one. If the twisty-tie that you are using is short you may
need additional twisty-ties to complete the sun craft. The first
step is to wrap your twisty-tie around all of the Popsicle sticks.
You can wrap one at a time or clump them all together. If you have
a particularly smaller lid you may not need all eight Popsicle sticks
and may be able to use only four. Make sure you have room at the
ends of the twisty-tie to poke through the lid. |

2: Depending on the lid that you are using you may find it
difficult to poke through the plastic and wrap around to hold the
Popsicle sticks in place. If you do not have a lid to use you can
use a circular piece of cardboard. Thin cardboard, thick paper, and
weak plastic usually will be able to allow you to poke through it
with the tip of the twisty-tie but hard plastic may require a cutting
utensil such as a pair of scissors or sharp large needle. No matter
the utensil you use just be very careful. The lid featured in the
picture is from a can of coffee and contained somewhat tough plastic
that was initially difficult to poke through. |

3: Once you have poked both of the tips of the twisty-tie
through the lid or circular cardboard you just need to twist them
together to secure the Popsicle sticks. Make sure that when you
twist that they they do not come to a sharp point. This fun craft
can be a great decoration in your child's room. They can display
it on their wall or hang it from their ceiling. It can remind your
child of the importance of Earth Day and can help him or her make
believe they are outside in the sun while playing in his or her
room. |
