Toddler St. Patrick's Day Rainbow Craft

In general rainbow crafts are fun to do and this one adds a really neat element to it that makes the colors stand out and eliminates the mess that comes with paints and markers. Whether you are making this craft specifically for St. Patrick's Day or just because you like rainbows it is a lot of fun to do.

Step 1: The first step that you will need to take is to cut out a rainbow-and-clouds shape out of cardboard, such as the back of a cereal box. The size of the rainbow and clouds will affect the next step. The clouds portion of the cardboard do not have to look like clouds because you will be covering them up with paper, but kids tend to be able to visualize the rainbow easier by doing this. Be prepared to do some trimming in a later step.

Step 2: Once you know the size of your rainbow you will be able to cut the pieces of string that you need for the different colors in the rainbow. It is easiest to cut all of the colors of string the same length, but know that you will be doing trimming once they are glued on. Make sure that the top color will fit well on the arc of the rainbow. Additionally cut out two clouds from white construction paper, they should be similar in shape or slightly bigger than the clouds on the cardboard.

Step 3: Have your child put glue all over the arc part of the rainbow. You will be helping them glue on the clouds after you have added the strings so do not worry about having your child putting glue on that area. In fact you should encourage them to temporarily avoid those areas because it will mean that they can make a mess with the craft. Again, the reason we use string is to eliminate mess that is associated with rainbow crafts.

Step 4: Have your child place one piece of string on the rainbow arc at a time. It helps to place the string at the center of the arc and then line up each end to follow the arc and stick to the glue. A traditional rainbow goes from top to bottom red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple, but your child can do it however they want. Once they have all of the strings on the arc, trim away any cardboard in the arc that sticks out, trim extra strings off, and glue on the clouds.

Again this craft is a lot of fun to do and is a great way to make an interesting St. Patrick's Day craft. Additionally, it is just as fun if you are just celebrating rainbows and it offers a great opportunity for you to teach your child about rainbows and the different colors in general. It will make a very durable decoration for your child's bedroom and will stay nice and vibrant with the bold colors of yarn in it.
